A Potentially Embarrassing Announcement

I am writing a book.

Seeing that statement alone and naked up there makes me want to dive into a heap of blankets and pillows and hide, because up until now this has been an extremely private endeavor. I’m not telling you this because I am trying to brag and look very smart and cool, because believe me that’s not how I feel. There is nothing more humbling than trying to write a book, or so it has been in my experience. I have given up and started again and given up and started again more times than I can count (practically every day). The majority of the time I am typing, a little voice inside my head is yammering on things like: “this is all a bunch of crap” or “you are never going to figure this out” or “you just aren’t talented enough.” That little voice is very lucky it’s not a physical person, because it’s likely I would have physically assaulted it by now. My hope is that this pile of crap will lead to some flowers (after extensive editing of course), but anyways…the real reason I am telling you this is so I will be motivated to actually finish it, to avoid the humiliation of looking like a loser.

Oh, and it’s fiction as well. I know I’ve mentioned a couple of times on here that it’s always been my dream to be a writer, and you might have assumed I meant non-fiction since that’s what I’ve been writing, but it’s actually been my dream to write fiction since I was a little girl. I’ve given up on that idea quite a few times, but somehow it always creeps its way back into my mind like a piece of gum I can’t stop stepping on. So, I intend to see it through, and you all are here to judge me in case I don’t. It may end up just being a pile of crap, but at least I will finally get that gum off my shoe. Don’t ask me any questions about it though, because I’m not going to tell you! Now, here are some inspiring Thomas Edison quotes for anyone who needs a little motivation:

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

“To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.”

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

“We often miss opportunity because it’s dressed in overalls and looks like work”

“Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.”

2015, the Year of Bacon, Stress, & Adventures

I believe people like to read about and see what’s going on in other people’s lives, because it gives them ideas and inspiration for their own, so I am going to share some of the adventures and stories, as well as a few of my favorite things from this past year. It was filled with bacon, meteor showers, stress, lots and lots of stress, and the people I love.

Highlights

new years prank

I rang in the new year for 2015 with a ridiculous and fun prank with a few of my favorite friends, one of those who happened to be running pretty late. One of my other friends had also invited a guy she had been dating whom none of us had met yet, so we decided that we would have three of us act as hostages tied to chairs with gags in our mouths, while the others hid. As soon as she got there the guy (whom she had never seen before) walked out of a back room with a “gun” a.k.a. an Airsoft rifle as we all squirmed in our seats. I went so far as to have a fake makeup bruise and dab water under my eyes for tears. Did she fall for it? No. But luckily she did fall for my husband jumping out of the closet behind her with an airhorn. Regardless it was super fun to plan out. But just so you know I DON’T recommend this, as the poor soul you pull it on might either fall into a heap on the floor, or pull out some super human karate moves and make the other guy fall to the floor.

davebox

My husband made me a “davebox” when I was sad because my birchbox was taking too long to get here. He filled it with bacon, chocolate chip cookies, and other awesome treats. It was the sweetest and most adorable thing ever.

gatlinburg trip

I went on an all girl’s trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee filled with hiking, yummy breakfasts, and belly laughs.

hot air balloon

I went to a hot air balloon festival in Helen, GA with my mom and my best friend. It was incredible seeing all the colorful and huge hot air balloons take off. Plus, we also go to ride on tubes down the river. So much fun!

My best friend and I finally finished watching the entire series of Gilmore Girls after almost three years of watching it every Thursday night. *Tear* it was amazing!

I released my blog in July! It’s always been my dream since I was a wee one to be a writer (ever since I won a writing contest on “I love you mom because” in the 4th grade by spelling sweatheart instead of sweetheart), and I’m finally making it happen.

Cumberland Island Travel Guide

I went to Cumberland Island, GA, which you can read about in my post here. It’s an island filled with wild horses, seashells, and gorgeous live oak trees covered in Spanish moss.

color run

I participated in the Color Run, and went to Six Flags with my best friend all in the same day, and didn’t die! Plus we bought season passes for 2016!

My husband made me this super impressive card for our anniversary. I’m talking cut out arms and legs and glued them all together type of made. He’s the best.

Star Wars! The movie was awesome! Literally one of my favorites! Rey is the bomb and oozes girl power!

Our land

And finally…we bought land!! Ahhhhh!!! One step closer to one of my other dreams, owning an adorable little cottage in the woods.

Favorite Things

Reading area

I finally created my perfect reading area/lazy work area. The recliner was a hand-me-down, the bookcase was a gift, and I got most of the books at estate and garage sales for a couple of bucks.

Diffuser

I bought a diffuser and some essential oils. I love it, because it naturally scents my home without all those harsh chemicals you find in traditional room sprays, etc. And apparently the essential oils are supposed to do good stuff for your mind and body.

My husband bought me this super awesome Harry Potter coloring book!

Music

The songs I was obsessed with in 2015 included:

“Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber

“Sound & Color” by the Alabama Shakes

“Smoke Break” by Carrie Underwood

and “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding, which I could not stop listening to!

Books I Read

Some of my favorite books I read this year included:

Dracula by Bram Stoker. I seriously loved this book more than I thought I would. It was dark and creepy and awesome.

Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith a.k.a. J.K. Rowling. This is her third detective novel, and it’s by far my favorite. She did a really good job of making the villain twisted, and kept my interest the entire way through.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. This is a semi-autobiographical book about a girl’s decline into mental illness and depression. Although sometimes I felt like I understood a little too well, this book was really interesting and insightful.

Favorite Cat Pictures

2015 was a good year, but it was way too stressful. This year is going to be full of writing and cutting things out of my life.

The Purpose of Life and Humanity, and the Freedom of Knowing the Answer

It has been hard. Some days I am my bright and chipper self, and some days I am not. This entire week has been a week full of hard. I am crushed under the weight and the pressure of all the things I’ve piled into my life. It has become like a drawer full of overflowing socks and underwear.

So I asked myself three questions today.

What am I doing here?

God put me here.

Why am I here?

God designed and created me, He thought me up, and made me be. He wanted me, and He wants me to want Him, to choose Him. I am here to live. I am here to choose. Here is just the questions before an eternity of living or dying. With God or without Him?

What really matters?

God, the others He created, and love.

Nothing else beyond this matters, but somehow all the elses become so much more important. They become the plots of our lives. They create the stress and the worry, when all life really needs to be is just… simple.

12 Reasons Why I Write

Why I write

I write because I have too many thoughts and ideas flying around inside my head, and I don’t feel they are doing any good just staying put.

I write because I want to help people and connect with them in a setting I am not completely socially awkward in.

I write because I’m not satisfied with living a meaningless life pursued to benefit myself.

I write because I hate losing my thoughts, and I want to chisel them into existence.

I write because I feel satisfied when I’m done, like eating a whole wheat sandwich.

I write because I’m afraid I won’t be heard (I have a soft voice).

I write because it’s the best way I can  communicate my soul.

I write because the words I speak rarely make sense.

I write because it’s how I understand the world.

I write because people freak me out.

I write because I am vain.

I write for myself.

Kittens, Superpowers, and Achieving Your Dreams

me n dave

Welcome to The Planned Path! My name is Jessica, and I will be your tour guide, or writer if you prefer the correct terms for things. If you would like to know a few things about me before we get started, I enjoy long walks in the forest, dancing, and cuddling with kittens. Pictured above is myself and my lovely husband, Dave. We are a family of six, the other four being our two cats, Pudge and Zero, and our two dogs, Leia and Alaska. All pictured below.

Pudge          Zero

Leia         Alaska

I have a deep desire to live meaningfully, as well as a slight (some may say major) tendency to plan out every little detail of every little thing. Join these two superpowers together and you have… The Planned Path (Unfortunately this was not created by radioactive spiders, but by long hours of planning, thinking, and a wee bit of hair pulling). If you like those sorts of things, you know, living meaningfully and having someone tell you how to do it, then this is the place for you.

Over the next six weeks I will be doing a series focusing on how to achieve your dreams and goals, and this will be starting…drumroll…TOMORROW. I’m filled with butterflies and dragonflies and all sorts of fluttering things, but most of all excitement! This series will be released every Monday until its completion, and you can reference back to my Achieving Your Dreams page to stay updated, and see what’s coming up. I also have several other tidbits related to travel, fun, and mindful living coming your way, so stay tuned.

Comments are encouraged and appreciated. If you have any questions, criticisms, or blog post ideas you want to throw my way, you can let me know at jess@theplannedpath.com.

See you soon mo chairde.
