This past month has been on full blast fun mode (minus having to attend jury duty). I went to Six Flags, I participated in the Color Run, I celebrated my 4th anniversary, and I’ve been watching scary movies like crazy! I’m going to have to do some boring paperwork or something to balance it out…just kidding.
So, one thing I’ve been thinking about lately is teenagers. Actually it’s something I think about all the time, my husband being a youth minister and all, but what I’ve been thinking about specifically is how harshly people judge them, and how incredibly unfair that is. People get so frustrated with the things they do or don’t do, and complain loudly about it or even go so far as to give them a piece of their mind. The thing that drives me crazy about this is the expectation that they should know the things that adult does, who has had years more experience and lessons learned. Something one of the wiser teenage girls told me once when we were first starting out in youth ministry, and were having a lot of issues and frustrations with the kids, has always stuck with me. She said, and I’m paraphrasing a bit, “be patient with us, we’re young, and we’re still learning.” Such a simple statement, but it completely opened up my eyes. Thinking back to when I was young, and what I didn’t know then that I know now, amazes me. It makes me wonder how much I don’t know now actually. So be easy on the teenagers in your life. They are young, they are learning, and they are on the verge of adulthood. What teenagers need are people willing to be patient, understanding, and to gently guide them out of love, not judgement.
